where to jack up a car with a floor jack?

13 Aug 2024

1. Front of the Car:

Frame Rails: On many vehicles, there are reinforced frame rails running along the bottom of the car. These are usually the safest points to jack up the front.

Crossmember: Some cars have a crossmember (a horizontal support bar) under the engine. This can often be a good place to jack up the car.

2. Rear of the Car:

Rear Axle: For vehicles with solid rear axles (common in trucks and older cars), the axle itself can be a jacking point.

Differential: The rear differential, located in the center of the rear axle, is another solid jacking point on rear-wheel-drive vehicles.

Rear Frame Rails: Similar to the front, many vehicles have rear frame rails that can be used.

3. Side of the Car:

Pinch Welds: Most cars have pinch welds along the sides, just behind the front wheels and in front of the rear wheels. These are often the designated jacking points used by the car's manufacturer.

Safety Tips:

Consult the Owner’s Manual: Always check the vehicle's manual to confirm the specific jacking points recommended by the manufacturer.

Use Jack Stands: Once the car is lifted, always place jack stands under the vehicle to support it. Never rely solely on the floor jack.

Flat, Stable Surface: Make sure you’re working on a flat, stable surface to prevent the car from rolling or tipping.

Ensuring you're using the proper jacking points and following safety protocols is essential when lifting your car.
